Hello friends! We are winding down another Sober October and Breast Cancer Awareness month. Do you know these two themes are intertwined? Many people know that alcohol is a carcinogen but they think it is just liver cancer. It actually causes 7 to 9 different cancers depending on your sources and one is breast cancer. This is just shocking to me! I don't smoke because it causes cancer. My husband, my Dad, and many other people have quit because they knew that smoking causes cancer. There are many reasons I don't drink alcohol now. Whenever I think about having a drink I say, "Nope, it causes breast cancer."
Alcohol gets a pass. Why does anything get a pass? Money, plain and simple, Big Alcohol has deep pockets. I know what you are going to say, "everything causes cancer." Is it worth it? Maybe it is to you. So how about this, just be informed. We have regulations for tobacco advertising. For example, Big Tobacco cannot advertise on tv, radio, and in print, it has to include warnings. Facebook and Instagram, banned advertising of vaping and smoking at the beginning of 2020. If you won't ban it, then require all those disclaimers as we do on prescription meds. Why not ban alcohol advertising on social media that is clearly targeting all of us including our kids to get us hooked on their product?
What about labeling? There are warning labels on all food products. There are warning labels on cigarette boxes. Again, why not on alcohol bottles? Where is truth in advertising? I’m not saying go back to prohibition. Just be informed. Alcohol increases a woman’s chance of cancer with every drink. According to the American Cancer Society, the research suggests that women who drink one alcoholic beverage a day have a 7 – 10 percent increased risk for breast cancer compared with non-drinkers, and this number jumps to 20 percent for those who have two to three drinks per day. Remember a standard size drink is 5 oz of wine or 12 oz of regular beer.
All I’m asking my dear friends is to be informed. If you are wanting to take a break from alcohol to examine your beliefs around alcohol I’m here to help. Sign up for a discovery call today. I would love to work with you.
